November update

Last month, we finally receive a new steam key to access S&Box game. This key made it possible for us to start to write the code of this upcoming game mod. We were pleasantly surprised with the possibilities offered by the game. However, this wide opening of the engine comes at a cost: there are elements that must be developed by the community. For example, the game doesn’t have a HUD, weapon selector, or even HP display. This choice was made so that each mod has the possibility of offering a rich and different experience. Hopefully, Garry and his team offered some examples that are freely available to developers.

In short, this month, we have mainly worked to understand how the S&Box code works. We started by making a very basic HUD display showing the player avatar and its job. The game avatar is called Terry, and as Terry is following the player mouse on the main game menu, we use the same technique to display it on our game mod.

Once this done, we started writing the database storage system. S&Box doesn’t allow us yet, for user safety reason, to use powerful and classic databases. This mean we also had to write our custom mechanism to store all the information of the player. @Leethium wrote us a data storage compatible with what game authorize us today. For now, we can store basic information such as text and number. This make it possible to store player job, show upper as “Unemployed”. We hope soon be able to store links and relation between entity, which mean we could store who is, in fact, in the job, but also player backpack and its inventory.

During November, we also started to imagine how to design a crafting system that is both simple and complete. We are not sure yet about what to show to the player, or how it will interact with the table, but we all agree that it is important to have clear and contextual information. This contextual information is significantly powerful when you start to have many craft tables running in parallel. That’s why we introduce in world contextual HUD.

Final world, we will be speaking about the player inventory. @Messorem designed what it will look like. We have an almost finished version. What are you feeling about it? Please tell us in the commentary section below!

We hope you enjoyed this update. Please consider subscribing to our newsletter to be informed of the progress of this project. Until that, cheers!
